Pharmacodynamics

Synthetic heptapeptide Semax is an analog of ACTH4-10 fragment (methionyl-glutamyl-histidyl-phenylalanyl-prolyl-glycyl-proline), devoid of hormonal activity. All amino acids are L-shaped.
Semax 0.1% is a mental performance stimulant. It improves brain function, memory, attention, ability to learn, relieves fatigue, facilitates adaptation during flights and climate changes, normalizes sleep and removes postnarcosis syndrome.

In ophthalmology it is effective in glaucoma optic neuropathy (glaucoma), optic nerve atrophy and diabetic retinopathy.

In pediatrics it is used to treat minimal brain dysfunctions and to improve the child's psychomotor activity.

Pharmacokinetics

Semax is absorbed from the nasal mucosa. At least 60-70% of the active substance is absorbed. Semax is quickly distributed into all organs and tissues and penetrates the blood-brain barrier.

Intended uses

  • Intellectual and mnestic (memory, attention) disorders, states after traumatic brain injury and neurosurgical operations; prevention and treatment of postnarcosis and asthenoneurotic disorders of various genesis; facilitating of adaptation in extreme situations; prevention of mental fatigue;
  • optic nerve atrophy, neuritis of inflammatory, toxic-allergic and vascular etiology, glaucoma optic neuropathy (glaucoma), diabetic retinopathy;
  • minimal brain dysfunction.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to the components of the drug, acute psychotic states, disorders accompanied by anxiety, endocrine system diseases, pregnancy and lactation.

Dosage and administration

Semax is applied intranasally.

Memory impairment: 3 drops in each nasal passage 2 times a day for 10 days. It is recommended to take 2 courses per year.

Chronic cerebral ischemia, asthenic and neurotic disorders: 3 drops in each nasal passage for 16 days. It is recommended to take 2-4 courses per year.

Stroke and TIA prevention: 3 drops in each nasal passage 2 times a day for 10 days. It is recommended to take 2 courses per year.

Recovery period after a stroke or TIA: 4 drops in each nasal passage 6 times a day for 16 days.

Preventing repeated strokes and TIA: 3 drops in each nasal passage 3 times a day for 16 days. It is recommended to take 2-3 courses per year.

Craniocerebral trauma and neurosurgical operations: 3 drops in each nasal passage 3 times a day for 16 days. It is recommended to take a second course in 6 months.

Postnarcosis memory and attention disorders: 3 drops in each nasal passage 3 times a day for 6 days.

Minimal cerebral dysfunction in children, including attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD): 2 drops in each nasal passage 3 times a day for 20 days. It is recommended to take 2-4 courses per year.

Glaucoma, optic nerve atrophy: 2 drops in each nasal passage 3 times a day for 20 days. It is recommended to take 2-4 courses per year.

Increase of working capacity, memory improvement, prevention of mental fatigue, stress reduction: 3 drops per each nasal passage 2 times a day for 10 days. It is recommended to take 1-2 courses per year.

Side effects

Prolonged use may cause a mild irritation of the nasal mucosa.

Overdose:
No symptoms of overdose were identified after a significant dose increase.

Interaction with other drugs

Taking into account the method of Semax administration (intranasal), it is undesirable to use other intranasal agents with a local vasoconstrictive effect.

Due to the chemical structure of Semax, there are no chemically incompatible combinations: the drug is rapidly destroyed and does not enter the digestive tract.

Pregnancy and lactation: Contraindicated in pregnancy and lactation.

Influence on the ability to drive vehicles and operate machines: no data
