What is Meldonium?

Meldonium is the active substance of Mildronate. It is a synthetic analog of gamma-butyrobetaine, a compound found in every cell of the human body. According to the official drug sheet Meldonium has the ability to prevent the accumulation of activated forms of unoxidized fatty acids in cells and normalize myocardial metabolism [1].

How does Meldonium work in the body?

According to the manufacturer, in ischemia Meldonium restores the balance between the processes of oxygen delivery and its consumption in cells. Also it activates glycolysis without additional oxygen consumption. This reduces oxidative stress [2] and cellular damage and makes the body use energy in a more efficient way. Check out comprehensive Meldonium review.

What are the Mildronate Benefits?

Mildronate’s mechanism of action determines the variety of effects of the drug [525]:

  • Increased efficiency, improved mood,
  • Reduced symptoms of mental and physical overload,
  • Activation of tissue and humoral immunity,
  • Cardioprotective effect.

Meldonium also shows a tonic effect on the central nervous system, and eliminates functional disorders of the somatic and autonomic nervous system in patients with chronic alcoholism and withdrawal syndrome. [3]

Meldonium in Sports

Among athletes, Meldonium is used to increase recovery rate, endurance, and exercise performance. It is said to improve muscle tissue oxygenation which helps muscles work better. [4]

Can Meldonium Be Used in Sports? – The substance is included in the WADA list as a hormone and metabolic modulator. For this reason it is not recommended to take it prior to serious competition. Meldonium can test positive in doping control tests.

Besides athletes, Meldonium is also used by those healthy individuals who just want to improve their work capacity during physical and mental overloads and cope with stress better. Please note that prior to taking any medication or supplement a proper consultation with the doctor is a must.

To increase tolerance to mental and physical overloads, the recommended dosage is 250 mg of Mildronate pills 2–4 times per day.

Before and during sports events, coaches often recommend athletes take 500–1000 mg before workouts, preferably in the morning. The standard duration of a course is between 14 and 21 days.

Mildronate injections

The compound can be taken IM or IV. The average dose for injections is 0.5-1.0 g (5–10 ml) per day. When the injection course is completed the attending physician may recommend continuing the treatment with the pill form depending on the patient’s condition.

For more information on the dosage refer to the official instructions section via the links below. The exact dosage and course duration shall be prescribed by your attending physician.
