Tricardin is a combination herbal medicine containing valerian rhizomes with roots, motherwort herb and hawthorn leaves.

The preparation has a sedative effect and can be used to treat hyperirritability and sleep and anxiety disorders.

The drug is based on a complex of biologically active substances, including valepotriates, iridoids, flavonoids, procyanidins, glycosides, essential oils, etc.

Valerian. Valerian acid and valepotriates have a sedative and antispasmodic effects. The biologically active substances of valerian have multiple effects. In particular, valerian inhibits the central nervous system, reduces its excitability and promotes the natural sleep. Sedative effects are slow to develop but stable. The biologically active substances of valerian slow heart rate and dilate coronary vessels. Valerian has choleretic effect and increases secretory activity of the gastrointestinal tract. The desired therapeutic effect of the drug is achieved following systematic long-term administration.

Hawthorn. Flavonoids and procyanidins, the active ingredients of hawthorn leaves, have cardiotonic and antiarrhythmic effects. It is acknowledged that hawthorn leaves also contain triterpenic acids (oleanolic, ursolic, and crataegolic) that improve brain and coronary vessels’ blood supply and enhance myocardial sensitivity to cardiac glycosides.

Motherwort. The active ingredients of motherwort herb are flavonoid glycosides (rutin, cosmosiin, quercetin, hyperoside, etc.), alkaloids (stachydrine 0.4%, choline, and leonurine), saponins, tannins (ca. 2%), iridoid monoterpenes (leonuride), and ascorbic acid. Motherwort has a sedative and hypotensive, cardiotonic and negative chronotropic effect. It alleviates the disease in patients with cardiovascular disorders, including high blood pressure, stenocardia, cardiosclerosis and myocarditis, heart palpitations, and heart failure.

Tricardin’s cardiotropic and sedative effect is provided by three well-known and widely used medicinal plants – valerian, motherwort, and hawthorn, which mildly correct the autonomic dysfunction in patients with neurocirculatory asthenia and vegetative neurosis.

Scientists in the Ternopil cardiology center performed clinical trials on several experimental formulations containing the abovementioned herbs in various proportions. The trials showed that while different herb proportions led to low therapeutic effects or to excessive hypotensive and sedative effects, the Tricardin’s herb proportion helped to stabilize the balance between the sympathetic nervous system and the parasympathetic nervous system, reduce anxiety and improve clinical symptoms of cardiopsychoneurosis and microvascular angina.

Moreover, you can buy Tricardin for the stabilization of blood pressure, as well as antiarrhythmic effects.

Pharmacodynamic properties

Cardiological and sedative drug. The biologically active substances of hawthorn fruit (flavonoids, choline, acetylcholine, tannins, and phytosterols) have hypotensive, cardioprotective, and antispasmodic properties. They improve brain and coronary vessels’ blood supply, enhance myocardial sensitivity to cardiac glycosides and slightly increase contractility of the cardiac muscle while decreasing its excitability.

The biologically active substances of valerian rhizomes and roots (ester of borneol and isovaleric acid, borneol, isovaleric acid, alkaloids, tannins, and sugars) reduce the central nervous system’s excitability and reduce stress and anxiety in case of mental exhaustion and fatigue. They also have a choleretic effect, slow heart rate, dilate coronary vessels and increase the secretory activity of the gastrointestinal tract.

The biologically active substances of motherwort herb (essential oil, saponins, tannins, and alkaloids) reduce the central nervous system’s excitability, stabilize the blood pressure and promote natural sleep.

Dosage and administration

A single dose for adults is 2 capsules 2 times a day (20–30 minutes before meals). In the case of mild insomnia, the dose is 2 capsules taken 1 hour before sleep.

Drug interaction

Mebicar (or tetramethylglycoluril) is an anxiolytic medication that works on the serotonergic system: taken in small doses it increases the effect of tryptophan, which is a precursor to serotonin. Mebicar purportedly has anti-anxiety properties. It is also used to aid smoking cessation and in the treatment of ADHD symptoms. Mebicar decreases the brain noradrenaline level, exerts no effect on the dopaminergic systems, increases the brain serotonin level, and does not elicit cholinolytic action.
